You only live once – and this world is huge and has so much to offer. And you deserve to see and learn new things. Make yourself worldly and just go!

Yes yes yes, life gets in the way. Money, kids – you name it. I don’t see these as any reason you still can’t explore. Take your kids to a park you normally don’t go to. Take snacks in the car and pick a direction and make a day or weekend trip.

It took a tiny bit of planning, but more mentally than anything else. (Trust me, I can say that because anyone who knows me knows I am a bad planner – not so much bad as just hate making plans!)

So we saw a three day weekend coming up and decided we were going to use it. We didn’t want to spend a lot and didn’t have much time to research things to do. So we came up with some quick ideas: Mexico for the beach, but we weren’t sure it was going to be warm enough or Palm Springs – because it sounded popular and we has never been there.

Palm Springs won. We found a very cheap hotel for a holiday weekend. And we got what we paid for.. Our room was a converted apartment with a functioning beauty salon in it. (That was closed for the weekend I guess!) it was probably last remodeled some time in the 70’s. But it got us to where we wanted to be for the weekend.

We took our beach cruisers and rode around town and went off recommendations for restaurants from people we met at each meal. We also skipped Siri and used that old fashion tourist pamphlet rack in the hotel lobby.

We ended up seeing things way beyond our expectations. It was a great last minute trip. I commented on the way home that I felt like we did so much in a day and half yet I felt so relaxed.

So maybe you can’t drive to Palm Springs but everywhere has something to offer. But it’s up to you to go find it!

Did you ever meet those people who never break from their routine? Some call themselves “steak and potato” kind-of-guys, meaning that’s what they like so that’s what they eat and that’s that. They don’t budge, they don’t try new things, so don’t bother asking them. Are you one of those people or do you seize opportunities as they arise?

Recently I undertook a somewhat last minute decision to make an 18 hour roadtrip. We “planned” for about a week and said “lets do it!” So we made some quick arrangements and hit the road. I would say we had a vague outline at best. The extent of our planning was picking a route and what time we were going to leave.

During the trip, we stopped in cites we never expected to see and did things we had no idea we would do. From impromptu history lessons of a neighborhood from a long time resident and stumbling upon long lost landmarks to line dancing with people way above my skill level and indulging in an authentic Louisiana crawfish boil, we tried some things that I don’t think we could have planned if we tried. And looking back it was those moments that might have been the best parts of the trip.

So the next time some opportunity to try something new comes up, give it a shot. You might feel akward until you get the hang of it, but most likely it wont kill you.

Daily life happens to wind itself to a grind pretty quickly. Cubicles, computers, and deadlines seem to rule the day. We all strive for vacation but sometimes even that seems like a chore. Security lines, crowds, and agendas. Have you ever said “I need a vacation from my vacation?”

I recently got a last minute invite to see my mother and sister for Mother’s Day. But being last minute meant sky high airline prices. So I added a day on each end of the trip and decided to drive!

18 hours, 3 states, and memories for a lifetime. I was able to see the countryside from the road. I smelled the farms, and talked with the locals. It was on my time. I stopped when I wanted to and sped by when I didn’t.

Sometimes you need to throw caution to the wind. Wonder where the next gas stop is. Find a hotel when you get there. Eat what the local recommend.
That is living – that is vacation!

Now let’s see how surprised my mom is when I pull up and surprise her 🙂
